The Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict, an NGO, counted nearly twice as many street demonstrations during the first half of 2019 as in the same period a year earlier.
In addition to protesting the erosion of democracy, Venezuelans came out into the streets with other demands.
The former Maduro regime’s corruption and mismanagement have led to rolling electricity blackouts and widespread shortages of food and medicine. According to the United Nations, 4.3 million Venezuelans have been displaced, and millions more are suffering from malnutrition.
The Trump administration has responded to the Venezuelan crisis by working politically and economically to isolate the illegitimate former regime. The United States has provided more than $376 million in humanitarian, economic and development aid for the Venezuelan regional crisis response since 2016.
